Cyst Removal

Cyst is a kind of sac which is filled with some sort of fluid. It is usually seen in and around the mouth. It can be seen on the tongue, palate, gum, salivary glands, throat, lips and floor of the mouth. It can also form on the bones in the mouth. The most common symptoms and causes for the cyst are listed below:

  • A swelling or a small palpable mass along the jaw or inside the mouth.
  • Sacs formation.
  • pain near the teeth and
  • Inflectional signs.

Infection can be considered as one of the major causes for cyst formation. Most of the cysts are not cancerous. But, it is necessary to make sure that it is only a cyst and not a tumor. So, a thorough check-up and proper treatment should be done. One of the best solutions is to remove the cyst.

Before all that, the patient should know about the types of cyst that he/she has got. The major types of cysts are:

  • Periapical: these are caused by a sort of infection in the pulp area of the mouth. A fluid will be created as a result of the infection. The surrounding tissue of the tooth will trap the fluid from escaping. This will lead to form the cyst filled with fluid.
  • Odontogenic: these are cysts that grow on the jaw bone. As a result, a bulge will appear in the bone. These cysts are tending to grow and can weaken and fracture the teeth and bone. So, the dentist will suggest for cyst removal.
  • Mucocele: these cysts appears as a result of an over irritation or injury on the tissue inside the mouth. These growths are painless and tend to break on their own. These are quickly healing. If it does not break, the size will be increased. There, the patient needs the help of a dentist to cut the cyst and drain the fluid.
  • Dentigerous: These types of cysts are developed as a result, when the wisdom tooth becomes wedged. They are usually unnoticed because they don’t cause pain.

When you feel that you have cyst or when you notice the symptoms of cyst, you should consult a dentist. After checking up the cyst, the dentist can suggest you the kind of treatments that you can go for. Some cyst may be cured by medication and treatment and some needs removal surgery. The procedure for this surgery is simple. But, if the cyst is large, it may require an extensive surgery. Usually, the cyst removals are done under local anesthesia. After the surgery, a follow-up with the dentist may require to make sure that the cyst won’t grow back.
