WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR YOUR CHILD LOSES A TOOTH DUE TO A FALL OR AN INJURY

A tooth can be removed one of two ways: very carefully by your dentist, or not-so-carefully by your football/rugby/soccer teammate, pavement or a hockey puck, just to name a few of the more common culprits.
If your tooth is knocked out, or "avulsed," it's critical that you receive dental care as soon as possible. If you don't, it may be impossible to re-implant the tooth and the tooth socket also may become infected. If you act quickly, your dentist may be able to successfully re-implant the tooth and save the socket.

Here's what to do if a permanent (adult) tooth is knocked out:

  • Handle the tooth by the top (crown) only, and not by the roots.
  • Don't rub on the tooth or scrape it to remove any material that might be on it - you could lose vital tissue.
  • Gently rinse the tooth in a bowl of water, but don't hold it under running water.
  • Try to replace the tooth in the socket. To help keep it in place, bite down gently on a piece of gauze or a moistened tea bag.
  • If you can't replace the tooth in the socket immediately, place it in your own saliva, whole milk or a sterile saline solution. If you don't have any saline, you can make your own using a ratio of 1/4 teaspoon salt to 1 quart of water. Placing it in water should be a last resort, because it doesn't preserve the tooth as well, which can make it more difficult to re-implant. (If you're heading straight to the dentist's office, you can also hold the tooth tucked between your gum and cheek until you get there.)
  • Get to a dentist immediately. If a dentist isn't available, go to a hospital emergency room.

What if the tooth isn't lost, but just loose?

You still need to see your dentist as soon as possible. This may help reduce the risk that the tooth will die or fall out later.

I play contact sports. How can I keep my teeth from getting knocked out?

Sports injuries are a leading cause of tooth loss. When playing any type of sport that where there's the risk of falling or receiving blows to the face, standard equipment should include helmets, face masks and mouth guards. If the type of mouth guard that's available at the sporting goods store doesn't fit properly, talk to your dentist about getting one that's custom-made.

Cavity Restoration

Tooth cavity is also known as tooth decay or caries. It is one of the most common diseases that children get. It is mainly caused by bacteria and other contributing elements. ‘Plaque’ inside the mouth creates cavities on tooth. The first sign of the cavity is the appearance of a white spot on the tooth’s surface. Then this improves to a bigger whole on the tooth.

The treatment for this can be determined after diagnosing the child. The main types of cavity restoration are direct and indirect restorations. In direct restoration, the filling is placed directly into the cavity. For this filling, materials such as dental amalgam, silver fillings, glass ionomers; resin ionomers; and some composite (resin) fillings are used.

Indirect restorations usually require two visits. The treatment will include inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns and bridges. These can be made of gold, base metal alloys, ceramics, or composites. An impression of the area will be restored by the dentist at the first visit. The second visit is to place the new restoration to the prepared area.
