Fluoride Application

Fluoride application refers to the application of fluoride or substances like fluoride for the prevention and management of tooth decay. Fluorides are commonly applied via gels, toothpastes, varnishes, mouth rinse etc. Along with fluoride, other substances like water and salts are used to supplement it.

Application of fluoride is considered as one of the 10 greatest achievements in public health till 20th century. This therapy is practiced in several ways ranging from simple procedure in house to medically administering such substances.

How does this prevent tooth decay?

Fluorides are injected into the saliva at lower concentrations. In doing so, they exert a topical effect on the plaque. Tooth decay is prevented mainly by the formation of fluorapatite. These substances increase the re-mineralization of enamel and decrease the de-mineralization of enamel. The physiology of dental bacteria is also modified by fluorides. Fluorides also disrupt the formation of acidic substances.

Under what conditions is fluoride application essential?

The following are the conditions in which application of fluoride is very much necessary:

  • Condition of dry mouth: Medically, this condition is known as xerostomia. The condition is the common feature of diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome. Since the amount of saliva in the mouth is considerably slower, fluoride application becomes necessary.
  • Periodontal disease: Such a disease can increase the exposure of tooth and its associated parts to harmful bacteria.
  • Presence of implants like crowns, braces etc: There is enough probability of decay in places where the tooth meets these implants. Decay prevention becomes a matter of great concern. Application of fluorides can be helpful in this regard.

Addition of calcium to the existing fluoride material is seen to reduce the cavities further. However it should be noted that fluorides does not repair the initially formed cavitites.

Application of fluorides should be done only at stipulated amounts. Overdose of these substances can lead to fluoride poisoning. Excessive amounts of fluoride can lead to dental fluorosis and in some cases, even skeletal fluorosis.
